Adverse possession, or squatters rights as it is more commonly known, is the process of obtaining possesory title over a piece of land. To put it in more layman’s terms, it is to take ownership of a piece of land by using it exclusively for a prolonged period.
An adverse possession claim can be made against either unregistered or registered land, the latter being more difficult due to the land registration act 2002.
